The Summer Wind

"Then softer than a piper man
One day it called to you
And I lost you / To the summer wind
The autumn wind and the winter wind
Have come and gone
And still those days, those lonely days
Go on and on
And guess who sighs her lullabies
Through nights that never end
My fickle friend / The summer wind"

"There's a moon over bourbon street tonight
I see faces as they pass beneath the pale lamplight

For I know what I do must be wrong
Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over bourbon street"

i think i'm on a moby roll...

inside

another moody shot from an abandoned building, taken though grates on windows, with another moody moby song title.

great lake

on seeing this (and it just so happened to be in chinatown) immediately thought of a repeated motif from 'in the mood for love,' (one of my favourites) also used by wong kar-wai in his other movies. took the photo.

here i was ripping a criterion copy of ITMFL borrowed from my best friend, going through moby's discography, came across an entire brilliant album, 'the end of everything,' and the picture, movie, songs and post title. they all came together.

oh why not (or how it all began)

longtime (or more recent and dedicated) readers will notice this blog started out with the intention of posting interesting photos on a regular basis--daily, if possible. somehow along the way it took a turn down a dark alley and turned into what it is now, where posts (usually) follow unpleasant occurrences.

so here are a few photos that wouldn't quite work in the usual morose way.

simplicity

the simplest things in life can make you smile: driving to a mountain lake, feeling the chilly wet air envelope you in the dark; smelling sickly sweet pungent pine; hearing the faint buzz of insects; realizing the band of light above is the Milky Way galaxy, blinding when you're in the middle of absolutely nowhere; walking though a patch of greenery, dotted with dew, sparkling as the sun comes up, long before anyone else is awake. the moment is yours alone. you savour it, and can make it through another day.

could look like one thing on the outside but be completely contrary at the core, privy only to very few. most people never make it past the initial cursory viewing. not saying that's a bad thing at all, it's just a matter of priorities. the clues are all there, in plain sight, and anyone who cares enough, can and will "read" it. just don't read what you want to read. so what's in here? in you? in . . . ?

"I said nobody knows you
When you're down and out
In your pocket, you ain't got one penny
And your friends, you didn't have any"
--Nina Simone

Get the balance right

"You think you've got a hold of it all
You haven't got a hold at all
When you reach the top, get ready to drop
Prepare yourself for the fall, you're gonna fall
It's almost predictable"
--Depeche Mode

On the road again

"On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Goin' places that I've never been
Seein' things that I may never see again,
And I can't wait to get on the road again"
--Willie Nelson

One more addiction

"Oh, oh, one more addiction in my world
Oh, one more connection to let go
Oh, floating down the river
Out of sight forever from my world
It's the only thing I know how to do"
--Natalie Imbruglia

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate"

"Per me si va ne la città dolente,
per me si va ne l'etterno dolore,
per me si va tra la perduta gente.
Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattore:
fecemi la divina podestate,
la somma sapienza e 'l primo amore.
Dinanzi a me non fuor cose create
se non etterne, e io etterno duro.
Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate"
--Dante Alighieri

In vino, veritas

Drink to celebrate, drink to drown; drink to cheer up, drink to depress; drink to open up, drink to close in; drink to speak your mind, drink to bite your tongue; drink to do, drink to avoid; drink to live, drink to numb life; one man's trash is another man's treasure; in the same vein, each of the preceding are different sides of the same coin; if life didn't have ups and downs you'd never know you were moving; for every occasion, an antithesis exists somewhere. You know, that for every single bottle that occasioned a joyous occurrence for one, one other who was very close was summarily shot down. The irony is that alcohol, a depressant, is being used to celebrate. C'est la vie.

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall...

Au contraire: mirrors tell the naked truth--as is usually case, it is the human interpretation that leaves much to be desired, often looking, but seldom seeing. Each person perceives uniquely through a lens, replete with imperfections, whatever characteristic colorations life & time have had in moulding the metaphorical glass.

Elsewhere

"I love the time and in between
The calm inside me
In the space where I can breathe
I believe there is a
Distance I have wandered
To touch upon the years of
Reaching out and reaching in
Holding out holding in

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I'll defend it as long as I can be
Left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand"
--Sarah McLachlan

High & Low

When you start high

only one place you can go

Yes, the engine is running, as you can see the tachometer reading ~600rpm far right. Quite the day. The highs and the lows. You can’t have one without the other.

Boulevard of broken dreams

"I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Where the city sleeps
and I'm the only one and I walk alone
[...]
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone"
--Green Day

Life, deconstructed

What do you notice first in this photo? Click-drag mouse to reverse text colours for my impression: the green shoe demands attention, but the real question should be where is he coming from, going to, leaning left apprehensively as if afraid of the unknown around the corner. What did you see?

One from the archives

Janus, old but opportune, I think.

Distractions

You can be looking right at something without ever realizing what you should be seeing. All it takes is for someone to point it out to you, cut through the clutter...and it suddenly it snaps into focus. Sometimes you never get past--or perhaps don't want to get past--seeing the superficial glitter in life.
C'est la vie.

Yadda Yadda Yadda

Keynote speaker, standing room only, people are riveted...but not all of them!

Playing the numbers

Can you imagine the guy's face? Coffee might have gone over the edge, but laptop was spared! Keep at it, one of these days your luck will turn sour.

Staring at the sun

I really don't know what he found so fascinating from that perspective, certainly one that suits the 28mm (0.8x adapter hooked onto the the lens) view. Plus he's shooting straight into the sun...asking for trouble.
